- Enroll in VA health care (Form 10-10EZ) — it's the gateway to HISA, adaptive equipment, and the service-dog benefit
- File your VA disability compensation claim first — your rating gates SAH/SHA, auto and clothing allowances, HISA, and more
- Appoint a free accredited representative — and verify anyone offering help via VA's find-a-rep tool
- If you're at risk of homelessness, call 877-424-3838 before anything else
- If eligible, apply for the annual clothing allowance by August 1
- Get your VA SAH eligibility letter before applying to Homes For Our Troops
- Never pay for help with an initial claim — it's free by law
- Re-verify every VA dollar figure at VA.gov (amounts reset October 1) and run the Live-or-Dead Check on any listicle program
