FAQ
VA benefits & eligibility
How the VA grant-like benefits work, what stacks, and the deadlines to watch.
- How do the VA housing grants actually work?
- SAH, SHA, and TRA are capped, non-competitive benefits tied to specific qualifying service-connected disabilities. You apply with a VA form (a VSO can help free); there's no competition. SAH can be used up to six times over your lifetime, and unused balance carries forward. The dollar maxima are set annually — the current FY2026 figures reset at the fiscal-year rollover on October 1, so always confirm the current maximum on VA.gov.
- Does the VA give you a service dog?
- No — that's a common misunderstanding. VA does not procure or pay for the dog itself. For a prescribed guide or service dog, VA provides a veterinary health-insurance benefit plus hardware and travel costs, and the dog must be trained by an accredited program. The organization that actually provides a trained service dog at no cost is a nonprofit — K9s For Warriors is the verified example for post-9/11 veterans with diagnosed PTSD, TBI, or MST.
- I'm rated — which of these benefits can I stack?
- Several stack. HISA (medical home changes, up to $6,800) is separate from the SAH/SHA housing grants, so you can use both. The auto allowance and the clothing allowance are independent benefits. The one rule to internalize: file your disability compensation claim first, because your rating is the gateway to most of these.
- What deadlines should I watch?
- Two near-term ones. The clothing allowance has a hard qualify-and-apply deadline of August 1 each year (payment arrives September through October). Operation Homefront's Critical Financial Assistance only accepts applications from the 1st through the 10th of each month. And remember every VA dollar figure resets October 1 with the new fiscal year.
The VA benefits reward a little homework: know which ones you qualify for, which stack, and when the deadlines fall. Eligibility and disability ratings are determined by VA, not by this guide — see the full housing & benefits breakdown.
